- The Belgian Foreign Minister stated the fundamental risks for the EU in the confiscation of assets of the Russian Federation
Belgium opposes the confiscation of Russia's frozen assets and sees serious risks for the European Union in such actions. This was announced on August 30 by the country's Foreign Minister Maxim Prevost before an informal meeting of European foreign ministers in Denmark.
"These assets are reliably protected by international law. This means that their confiscation will lead to systemic financial instability, as well as undermine confidence in the euro. Thus, these are fundamental risks for all member states," Prevost said. A video of his conversation with journalists is posted on the portal of the audiovisual service of the European Commission.
Prevost also noted that changing the investment strategy of assets is not considered an option, as this may lead to increased legal, financial and judicial risks."Газета.Ru ".
On August 29, the Euractiv portal reported that the European Union (EU) countries are discussing tougher measures in the upcoming 19th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. It is noted that the tightening of measures includes plans to confiscate Russian frozen assets. The European Commission is preparing "ways to implement these plans and plans to submit them to the EU member states soon."
According to the portal, France, Germany and Belgium express particular concern about the confiscation of Russian assets, as such a measure could undermine confidence in the euro as a reserve currency. At the same time, the article also emphasizes that the EU's ability to impose restrictions against Moscow is "approaching the limit."
