Lukashenko called Shchedrin a legendary composer and expressed his condolences.
On August 29, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed his condolences over the death of composer Rodion Shchedrin, and also called him a legendary composer.
"A legendary composer has passed away. His outstanding works have been captivating for many decades with their depth and power of sound. <... > The bright memory of him will forever remain in our hearts," the message on the website of the head of the republic says.
According to the Belarusian leader, Shchedrin will be remembered as the greatest master with a great creative legacy that has become the property of world musical culture.
Sergei Bezrukov, People's Artist of Russia and artistic director of the Moscow Provincial Theater, said that Russian classical music had ended with the composer's death. According to him, Shchedrin's music showed stubbornness, innovation, real joy, and sometimes deep longing and tenderness.
The death of the composer at the age of 93 became known earlier that day. The press service of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia noted that Shchedrin is an epoch in the life of world musical culture. The theater's lobby will also be open on August 29-31 to honor Shchedrin's memory.
