- Russia has agreed with the Confederation of Sahel Countries to open engineering classes
Russia, together with the Confederation of Sahel States, which includes Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, has taken the initiative to create engineering classes as part of expanding cooperation in the fields of education and science. The meeting on August 29 was attended by Sergey Kravtsov, Minister of Education of the Russian Federation, Sergey Tsivilev, Minister of Energy, Ministers of Higher and Secondary Education of the Sahel countries, as well as a delegation from the Republic of Djibouti.
"We have agreed to create engineering classes in these countries, to exchange students, to send teachers of the Russian language, teachers in natural sciences subjects. And we will strengthen our cooperation in the field of personnel training as much as possible," Kravtsov said.
It is noted that such decisions will contribute to the development of education in African countries. Tsivilev, in turn, clarified that the Russian side would not be limited to the Sahel countries only, but would work with other regions of Africa to support the growing population.
"Now the demand for engineers is growing all the time, engineers are needed in all sectors of the economy, but an engineer ... not every child can become an engineer. <… > Therefore, we will create engineering classes in African countries, where children will be selected on a competitive basis who are ready to become an engineer and link their fate with this important field," he said.
In addition, the parties discussed further interaction of relations at the horizontal level between Russian and African universities, as well as the development of Russian language schools and other priority areas of specialist training (agriculture, energy, medicine).
On August 14, the heads of defense departments of the member countries of the Confederation of Sahel States signed memoranda of understanding with Russia. Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said that the ministry is ready to provide comprehensive assistance to ensure stability in the region.
