The number of mosquitoes capable of carrying chikungunya fever in Russia is low, which means there is no risk of an epidemic yet. In order not to get infected with the virus, it is important to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, virologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences Albert Rizvanov told Izvestia on August 29.

"It is important to use repellents, eliminate running water in yards, and use clothing that covers the body, especially during the daytime in tropical regions. Well, it's time to identify cases [of the disease] among tourists who return from the tropics," he said.

Rizvanov added that the disease is usually not fatal, but it can cause serious discomfort. The joint pain associated with chikungunya may not subside for weeks, and sometimes months. The disease is most severe in the elderly, children, and carriers of chronic diseases.

On the same day, Rospotrebnadzor reported the first imported case of chikungunya fever in the Russian Federation. It was clarified that the patient was hospitalized in a moderate condition. At the same time, the agency noted that there are no risks of infection spreading in the country, since fever is transmitted through insect bites, and not from person to person.
