The processes in Moldova are cyclical, which is especially noticeable against the background of the negotiations on Ukraine. On August 29, Yegor Dibrov, a political scientist, specialist in political and economic conflicts, and an employee of the Faculty of Political Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University, told Izvestia.

This is how he commented on the imposition of sanctions by Canada against the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, and the Victory opposition bloc in Moldova.

According to the expert, Canada continues to adhere to its anti-Russian policy, despite the change of government.

"The departure of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not changed the internal sentiments of one of the anti-Russian leaders. For Canada, it doesn't matter if it's a Hutsul or someone else. The main thing is to carry out the political liquidation of a strong political leader," the source said.

Dibrov also noted that in Europe, where, as it would seem, democracy and pluralism of opinions prevail, one position prevails — "Transatlanticism above all." Anyone who advocates a nationally oriented policy is perceived as a threat. According to him, Canada's actions could be justified only if Moldovan politicians called for joining another country, but this is not happening.

"The main position of the representatives of Gagauzia is to take into account the interests of the region within Moldova, but the President of the Republic, Maia Sandu, ignores and sabotages this. Now we are seeing more and more how the "transatlantists" are suppressing the diversity of opinions, calling it freedom. Canada is part of the position of the transatlantists, who are working out a given narrative," the expert emphasized.

Regarding the impact of sanctions on the upcoming parliamentary elections in Moldova, Dibrov said that the pressure on candidates indicates external interference in the political process, which must be stopped by the country's security forces. He also added that Sandu's support for "transatlanticism" leads to ignoring this impact, which, in his opinion, violates the Constitution of Moldova.

On August 21, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pointed to Moldova's attempts to limit the activities of the "increasingly popular" opposition in her country. Later, the leader of the Victory bloc, Ilan Shor, also accused the President of the republic of betraying the interests of his people, in particular, betraying the image of a "strong and prosperous state."
