- Scientists have warned of the threat of a "mirror epidemic" for humanity
The development of "mirror life" raises concerns among experts from leading American universities because of its potential consequences. This was reported by Foreign Affairs magazine on August 28.
We are talking about fictional organisms created using molecules that are a mirror image of the living creatures we are used to. In nature, all living things rely on "left" amino acids and "right" sugars. "Mirror life" implies the exact opposite of these structures, which makes it, in theory, immune to ordinary biological processes.
"The creation of mirror life would entail a deliberate change in the biological paradigm by developing synthetic organisms in laboratories built from opposite versions of the most important molecular components. Such organisms would represent living systems functionally equivalent to natural life," the article says.
The development of one such cell will take scientists from 10 to 30 years, according to the publication. This technology can help explore the origin of life by reconstructing the biochemistry on the "other side" and shedding light on the evolution of life on Earth and other planets. It will also find applications in medicine and bio-production.
At the same time, the authors of the study note that it is precisely the unique properties of the "mirror life" — its longevity and freedom from natural restrictions — that can turn into an existential threat. These same qualities can provoke the spread of infections that are dangerous to all living organisms.
It clarifies that despite the fantastic concept of "mirror life", potential risks require prompt government response and international regulation. The scientific community is calling for the suspension of research or the development of a strict regulatory and ethical framework.
The Science Daily magazine reported on August 10 that scientists have identified a micro protein that regulates the accumulation of lipids in fat cells, which may pave the way to new treatments for obesity. It was clarified that in the course of the work, the researchers compiled a list of 38 potential micro-proteins associated with the formation of fat droplets.
