Russia will evaluate the possibility of expanding the toll road network for trucks
Currently, the economic impact of the possibility of extending the Platon system to regional roads is being assessed in Russia. This was reported to Izvestia on August 29 by the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation.
To carry out such an assessment, it is necessary to conduct appropriate research and modeling, the ministry said. The final decision on the introduction of a toll system for trucks in regional areas has not yet been made, the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation emphasized.
"Currently, no such decision has been made. The possibility and options for extending the Platon system to regional roads will be evaluated after conducting appropriate research and economic modeling," the press service of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation told Izvestia.
At the same time, as follows from the data posted on the official website of the Unified Information System in the field of Procurement, the Higher School of Economics is developing a concept for extending the Platon system to regional roads. The university clarified that this work will be completed in December 2025.
"In addition to technical solutions, the Higher School of Economics will also develop scientifically sound proposals on the organizational and legal form for the creation and operation of regional toll collection systems for damage compensation," the press service of the Higher School of Economics told Izvestia.
Experts interviewed by Izvestia believe that it is only a matter of time before the system of charging trucks for travel on regional highways is expanded. This will inevitably lead to an increase in the cost of freight transportation, they note.
