- The media reported on the threat to the growth of the European economy due to increased spending on defense
The governments of the United Kingdom and the European Union are seeking to increase military spending, expecting economic growth, but this may not happen if the money is misinvested. This was reported by The New York Times on August 27.
"Governments across Europe <...> are hoping that hundreds of billions of dollars in additional military spending will boost a flagging economy. The dividends from peace that arose after the end of the cold war have been reversed: there will be less money for schools and pensions, and more for tanks and missiles," the publication says.
It is noted that it is unclear what the increase in defense budgets will lead to: significant long-term economic growth or an increase in stocks from weapons manufacturers.
The author notes that it depends on what the additional funds will be spent on and where they will come from, for example, from tax increases, loans, or cuts in education spending.
On August 26, it was reported that German seaports require €3 billion from the defense budget to expand infrastructure and protective structures in case of emergencies such as armed conflict. In a letter sent to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, ZDS stresses the importance of ports as logistics hubs for military transportation and criticizes current federal funds as insufficient.
