Gutsul called for Moldova to be returned to the framework of the rule of law
The head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Evgenia Gutsul, called for Moldova to be returned to the framework of a legal and democratic state. She stated this on August 27 in her address on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic, published on the website of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia.
"For Gagauz people, as for all citizens of the country, independence is an opportunity to preserve their identity, language, culture and traditions, to be heard in a single state. But at the same time, we understand that our struggle is not over," Hutsul said.
Hutsul called for continuing the path to a country where every citizen, regardless of his nationality and language of communication, is respected and not persecuted for his beliefs. She also stated that Gagauzia has every right to demand that Chisinau comply with the Moldovan constitution and the law on the special legal status of the autonomy.
On August 24, Russian Ambassador to Moldova Oleg Ozerov said that the European Union (EU) openly interferes in the country's affairs, hiding behind slogans of European integration. According to him, this is reflected in the allocation of grants to non-governmental organizations (NGOs), which are mainly engaged in discrediting relations with Russia.
Earlier, on June 4, a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the Social Party, Bogdan Cirdea, said that the President of the Republic, Maia Sandu, was not seeking to solve the republic's problems, as she intended to leave the republic after completing her mandate and take up a post within the EU.
On August 5, the head of Gagauzia was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of allegedly financing the Shor party. On August 7, the People's Assembly of Gagauzia announced that it did not intend to recognize the sentence imposed by the Hutsul. The parliament considers the verdict "politically motivated and anti-Gagauz." On August 13, international lawyers joined the Hutsul case. Gonzalo Boye, a legal consultant at the European Center for Constitutional Human Rights, called the case of the head of Gagauzia a very disturbing case.
