Pensions blocked due to sanctions were transferred to Russians in Latvia and Estonia.
Russians in Latvia and Estonia have received pensions that were previously blocked due to sanctions. The total amount of transferred pensions amounted to €15.4 million. This was announced on August 27 by the press service of the Social Fund of Russia.
"13.3 thousand people have become recipients of funds under international agreements with Latvia and Estonia, most of whom live in Latvia. A total of €15.4 million has been transferred for retirement," the foundation's press service told TASS.
It is specified that these are planned payments for the third quarter of this year and funds for the first and second quarters. Previously, such payments were blocked by foreign banks due to sanctions.
According to preliminary information, Estonia plans to transfer funds to pensioners from September 8 to September 14, in Latvia — from September 8 to September 21.
The department noted that pensioners who live abroad receive funds from the Social Fund once a quarter to an account opened with a foreign bank or through a foreign pension agency. Pensions are paid in foreign currency through a bank that provides international transfers, and the process itself is organized through a system of correspondent banks.
They added that the transfer requires the consent of the foreign party to make payments. In August, a similar consent was issued by the competent authorities of the Latvian and Estonian republics.
In addition, the Russian side expects a similar response from the pension authorities of Israel, Lithuania and Bulgaria, which also restrict the acceptance of pensions from Russia. After receiving the consent, payments will be transferred to these countries.
Izvestia was informed on July 31 that Estonian law enforcement agencies were persecuting Russian compatriots for political reasons. According to the Russian Embassy, more than ten Russians have been criminally prosecuted since 2022. It is clarified that they are most often accused of allegedly intelligence activities.
