Mammoth remains found on the banks of the Abin River in Kuban
In the Abinsky district of the Krasnodar Territory, scientists have found the remains of a young woolly mammoth. This major paleontological find was made on the banks of the Abin River.
The remains are well preserved, they include fragments of tusks, rib bones and a spine, writes KrasnodarMedia news agency.
Experts from the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences admit that the age of the remains exceeds 20 thousand years. They belong to a young male who died at about 10 years old. The death of the animal could have occurred near a reservoir, prolonged exposure to water made the bone structures loose, Ilya Biushkin, the head of the district, told Telegram.
The agency notes that this is not the first major paleontological find for this area. So, in 1986, the remains of ancient southern elephants were found here. This may indicate the rich historical past of the territory.
Local authorities have announced plans to organize new research expeditions in 2026 to continue exploring the past. And this year, the agency writes, a total of 164 archaeological expeditions are to be conducted in the Krasnodar Territory. According to Vice-Governor Roman Luzinov, Kuban is one of the leading regions of Russia in terms of the number of archaeological studies.
Earlier, on August 1, it was reported that the molar tooth of a young woolly mammoth was found by archaeologists in the Pochainsky ravine in the center of Nizhny Novgorod. The find was discovered at a depth of about 2 m from the modern surface, closer to Rozhdestvenskaya Street. According to experts, this area is of significant interest for paleontological research.
