- The search for swimmer Svechnikov, who disappeared in the Bosphorus, was launched by his wife and relative
The wife of Russian Nikolai Svechnikov, who disappeared in the Turkish Bosphorus Strait, and his relative are searching on the water with rescuers. Footage from the rescue boat was made available to Izvestia on August 26.
The athlete's wife Antonina plans to organize a search for her husband on land along the shores of the Bosphorus, but there are not enough people, she is trying to attract volunteers through social networks. The woman described the main features of her husband — he was wearing a black sleeveless suit and a green cap number 2554.
"I'm asking for your help! If anyone is close to the coast of the Bosphorus, on both sides of the strait, please join me in the search for my spouse. I will be very grateful for your help," she wrote.
Svechnikov went missing on August 24. A professional swimmer did not reach the finish line across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. According to one version, Svechnikov could have had a leg cramp, which is why he was carried away by the current. Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov also suggested that the man could have been swept away by the current.
The wife of the missing swimmer, in turn, expressed her intention to request a video of Svechnikov's full swim. According to her, she is going to appeal to the prosecutor's office and get a written opinion from the consulate about which forces were involved in the search. Alyona, a relative of the missing swimmer, had previously reported that divers had also begun searching for Svechnikov. Subsequently, the Istanbul authorities announced the beginning of an investigation into the causes and circumstances of Svechnikov's disappearance.
