Istanbul authorities are investigating the causes and circumstances of the disappearance of Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov, who participated in a swim across the Bosphorus Strait. The relevant information was published on the website of the city's governorate on August 25.

According to the results of the control checks at the end of the competition, it was established that Svechnikov did not reach the finish line. It is noted that surveillance camera recordings and chips attached to the swimmers' legs were checked.

"The specified person started the swim, but did not leave the water at the finish point. After the incident, Coast Guard officers began search and rescue operations in the area of the route and throughout the Bosphorus Strait, but did not find any traces of the said person. The investigation of the incident is ongoing," the report says.

Earlier that day, the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul announced contact with local authorities in connection with Svechnikov's disappearance.

Svechnikov's disappearance became known earlier that day. A professional swimmer did not reach the finish line when swimming across the Bosphorus in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the athlete disappeared from sight. According to one version, Svechnikov could have experienced a leg cramp and was carried away by the current. Honored Master of Sports, world record holder in swimming Nikolai Skvortsov also suggested that the man could have been swept away by the current.

The wife of the missing swimmer Antonina, in turn, expressed her intention to request a video of Svechnikov's full swim. She also clarified that she was going to contact the prosecutor's office and get a written opinion from the consulate about which forces were involved in the search.
