Germany criticized the plan of voluntary conscription due to shortage of reservists
The head of the Bundestag's defense committee, Thomas Rwekamp, said that Germany would not be able to cover the needs of Bundeswehr soldiers only through voluntary conscription, as proposed by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. This was reported on August 25 by the Tagesspiegel newspaper.
"Germany lacks more than 80,000 regular soldiers and 140,000 reservists to protect itself and fulfill its obligations to NATO. I have serious doubts that this is possible only with the help of voluntary conscription," said Revekamp.
According to him, the current draft law on new military service does not yet meet the modern challenges of security policy. The head of the committee also stressed that Germany needs to return compulsory military service, and therefore members of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) party will definitely propose changes to Pistorius' bill.
The Berliner Zeitung (BZ) newspaper reported on August 9 that the German authorities have begun to rearm the Bundeswehr in order to make the strongest army in Europe. It is specified that within the framework of this project, Germany plans to submit more than 60 contracts for the purchase of weapons to parliament for approval by the end of the year. Germany also plans to surpass NATO countries in defense spending. In particular, the Bundeswehr plans to purchase 20 Eurofighter fighter jets, 3,000 Boxer armored fighting vehicles and at least 3,500 Finnish Patria armored vehicles.
