European mail will suspend delivery to the United States due to new tariffs
European shippers began suspending shipments to the United States after the cancellation of the de minimis regime, which exempted parcels worth up to $800 from tariffs. The decision comes into force on August 29 and may lead to disruptions in international trade and gift delivery. This was reported on August 24 by the Axios portal.
"The uncertainty about the new rules and the lack of time to implement them are forcing us to suspend delivery," said the PostEurop association, which unites the national postal services of Europe.
According to the organization, at least 16 postal operators have already announced the temporary suspension or restriction of shipments to the United States. Among them are Royal Mail (UK) — suspension with plans to resume delivery in a new mode in two days, Bpost (Belgium) — stop from August 23 to set up the system, Deutsche Post (Germany) — restrictions from August 22, the postal services of France, Greece, Austria and the Nordic countries.
According to experts, about 1.3 billion de minimis parcels arrived in the United States last year, of which about 60% came from China. The new tariffs have already hit the popular Shein and Temu marketplaces, increasing the cost of their supplies.
Earlier, on August 22, it was reported that Canada would cancel retaliatory duties on most goods from the United States. The article clarified the change in tariff policy to comply with the measures of the states. The 25% duty will remain only on American steel and aluminum, as well as on cars.
