Lieutenant General Ko Jong Chol, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army, accused the Republic of Korea and the United States of "dangerous provocations" near the southern border. The reason was more than 10 warning shots fired at the DPRK military. This was reported on August 23 by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

"This dangerous provocation may bring the situation in the southern border region into an uncontrolled phase," Lieutenant General Ko Jong Chol said in a statement.

According to him, the construction of barriers on the border is a "measure to strengthen sovereignty" and does not pose a threat to neighbors.

"The complete separation of the territory on which the DPRK exercises its sovereignty from the territory of the Republic of Korea is a step to reduce tension, and not a threat to anyone," Ko Jong Chol said.

He also added that Pyongyang had notified the United States in advance about the work on the border in order to avoid incidents. Provocations, including loud-speaker broadcasts and aircraft flights near the border, are only intensifying.

North Korea blamed the United States and South Korea for the possible escalation of the situation.

Earlier, on August 19, North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un called the military exercises of the United States and the Republic of Korea a manifestation of hostility and confrontational towards the DPRK. He noted that such circumstances will serve to develop the country's defense capability.
