US President Donald Trump exchanged views with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky behind closed doors during a meeting in Alaska and at the White House. Alexander Konkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, expressed this opinion on Friday, August 22.

"Of course, there is a fairly frank exchange of views behind closed doors, aimed, among other things, at finding the optimal formula for ending the conflict, if it can be so roughly described. Although to a greater extent, we are probably talking about the fact that the United States, and specifically even Trump, his administration has a certain maximum program regarding the Ukrainian crisis," Konkov said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .

According to the political scientist, the American leader has chosen the image of a peacemaker who ends the wars initiated by former US President Joe Biden.

"As for the Ukrainian crisis, it turned out to be the toughest nut for Trump. Therefore, there is a certain maximum program in this regard - to make a reputation for oneself on the alleged end of this crisis, which has been going on in Ukraine for more than a decade," he added.

According to Konkov, Trump also has a minimum program, which consists in the utilitarian requests of the American administration to reduce budget expenditures.

"It is important for him to have a picture of the end of the crisis. At the same time, without prejudice to American interests," the political scientist explained.

Earlier, on August 21, Zelensky announced his readiness to hold presidential elections in Ukraine to end the armed conflict, RT reports.

On August 20, the Ukrainian edition of "Country.ua" reported that the signing of a memorandum between the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Ukraine and the Election Commission of Great Britain can be used to remove Zelensky, IA Regnum reports.

It clarifies that Ukraine's dependence on financial and military support provided by Europe is used as a lever for such infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the UK Election Commission and the CEC of Ukraine had signed an agreement on cooperation and exchange of experience in the conduct of elections.

On August 18, Zelensky, during a meeting with Trump, allowed the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine. According to him, this requires "certain security conditions."
