US President Donald Trump said on August 22 that he would prefer not to attend a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky.

"Let's see if I have to be there (at the meeting. — Ed.) to be present. I wouldn't like. I would prefer them to have a meeting and see what they can do," Trump said.

He also added that it is necessary to look at whether the Russian leader and the head of the Kiev regime will be able to work together at all.

The Guardian newspaper reported on August 21 that the American leader intends to temporarily move away from the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine in order to allow Moscow and Kiev to hold a bilateral meeting of the leaders of the countries.

At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Putin was ready to hold talks with Zelensky if all issues requiring discussion at the highest level were well worked out. Lavrov recalled that the Ukrainian leader has not yet revoked the decree, which explicitly prohibits contact with the President of the Russian Federation.
