Russian chess players won the Youth Olympiad in Colombia ahead of schedule
The Russian team prematurely became the winner of the World Chess Olympiad among athletes under 16 years of age. In the eighth round of the tournament in the Colombian city of Barranquilla on Friday, August 22, the Russians beat the second national team of Kazakhstan.
Thus, our athletes already have 16 points before the end of the tournament. The Russian team is represented by Ivan Zemlyansky, Savva Vetokhin, Artyom Uskov and Anna Shukhman.
The Belarusian team is in second place with 13 points. In the final round, they will have to play with the Russians, but even if they win, the Belarusians will not be able to catch up with the leader.
The final round will be held on Friday, starting at 18:00 Moscow time. 85 national teams from 41 countries are taking part in the competition, Sport-Express notes.
Earlier, on June 24, 15-year-old Russian chess player Maxim Ivannikov defeated Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the weekly Title Tuesday prize tournament. Later, on June 25, the Russian shared that at first he was happy, but could not believe in his victory.
