In New York, six people have died due to an outbreak of legionellosis, also called legionnaires' disease. This was reported on August 22 by the ABC television network.

"[The latest victim] passed away earlier this month outside of New York City. It is reported that as of Thursday, August 21, 111 people had been diagnosed with the disease.

According to doctors, the bacteria that cause legionellosis spread through the water supply systems of buildings. The outbreak of the disease is associated with cooling towers, systems that cool buildings using water and air flow. So, the infection was detected in 12 cooling towers that serviced 10 buildings.

However, legionellosis is not transmitted from person to person.
