- Baghdad announced the beginning of the withdrawal of the US military from the Ain al-Asad base
The first US military personnel left the largest Ain al-Asad base in Anbar province in western Iraq as part of the phased withdrawal of troops from the international anti-terrorist coalition, official sources in Baghdad told Izvestia.
"Columns of military equipment have moved out of the base towards the Harir base in the city of Erbil in Kurdistan, in accordance with the agreement on the withdrawal of international coalition forces," the interlocutors noted.
The Iraqi Shafaq news agency clarifies that the Ain al-Asad base will be permanently closed on September 15.
In September 2024, the United States and Iraq signed an agreement on the withdrawal from the country of the forces of the international coalition led by the United States involved in the fight against the Islamic State (IS, ISIL, a terrorist organization banned in Russia). According to the American media, according to this plan, part of the troops should leave Iraq by September 2025, and the rest by the end of 2026.
