The American called Zelensky's main goal in negotiations with Trump
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky did not aim to convince the American leader Donald Trump about his approaches to peace, but at the same time tried to persuade him to provide the country with guarantees from the United States. Pavel Dubravsky, a political analyst and Americanist, author of the Campaign Insider Telegram channel, made this assumption on Tuesday, August 19.
According to the expert, so far the United States is not interested in such promises and is trying to shift the costs of concluding a peace agreement to Europe. However, he admitted that this position may change in the near future.
"Whether or not he succeeded [in convincing Trump] is still unclear. But Europe also continues to insist on American guarantees, and even better, a military contingent," Dubravsky said.
At the same time, the American expert suggested that one of the practical outcomes of the negotiations could be a partial cease—fire in the air and at sea. European countries have insisted on this, but it is not yet known how Russia will react to such a proposal.
"I think the United States can convince the Russian side on this issue. The same applies to security guarantees," Dubravsky concluded.
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that if Ukraine renounced its neutrality, the provisions underlying its recognition as an independent state would disappear, RT reports.
The diplomat recalled that the declaration on Ukraine's state sovereignty clearly states that the country is nuclear-weapon-free, neutral and non-aligned.
The conversation between Trump and Zelensky at the White House took place on August 18. The closed-door talks lasted about 30 minutes. After that, the American and Ukrainian presidents talked with the leaders of the European Union countries.
