The results of the talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Leader Donald Trump in Alaska indicate a deepening rift in transatlantic relations. Yuichi Hosoya, Director of Research at the Asia-Pacific Initiative in Tokyo, wrote about this for The Japan Times on August 19.

"The tacit agreement of US President Donald Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit in Alaska last Friday is further evidence that the United States and its NATO partners are moving further apart every month," the article says.

The author notes that criticism of European democracies reflects a broader ideological shift and a growing rift in transatlantic relations. In particular, the journalist points to a speech by US Vice President Jay Dee Vance that the threat to Europe comes not from external players, but from internal ones that depart from fundamental values. Vance also criticized the actions of the German authorities towards the Alternative for Germany party, as the voices of its supporters deserve to be heard.

"Trust in the American leadership is weakening, and the desire for greater 'strategic autonomy' is gaining momentum in Europe," he writes.

At the same time, Europe still lags far behind the United States in both defense technology and industrial potential. The author admits that in the short term, these tensions may ease, and transatlantic ties will regain their former stability.

The meeting between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. During a joint press conference, the Russian leader noted the desire of his colleague from the United States for a settlement. Trump, in turn, shared that the negotiations went very well and called the summit in Alaska wonderful.
