Israel reported receiving a response from Hamas to the deal proposal.
The Israeli authorities have received from the intermediaries a response from the Palestinian Hamas movement to a proposal for a deal on the Gaza Strip. This was announced on August 18 by Dmitry Gendelman, adviser to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"Israel has received a response from Hamas from the mediators," he replied to a question from TASS.
Al Jazeera reported earlier in the day that Hamas had accepted a new cease-fire proposal put forward by Egypt and Qatar, which are mediating negotiations between the movement and Israel. This step was taken after talks between Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Assad in Cairo on the ceasefire in Gaza.
On August 16, Israel put forward a number of conditions to Hamas, under which Tel Aviv would be ready to conclude a cease-fire deal — supporters of the movement should lay down their arms and release all hostages at the same time. A few more points of the demands of Netanyahu's office are the demilitarization of the entire territory of the Gaza Strip, which will be controlled by the Israeli army and a change of government, the new representatives of which will peacefully side by side with Israel.
On July 30, the Arab League, in particular Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, together with France, approved the UN declaration on resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and also called on Hamas to disarm. Later, on August 2, according to the Al Arabiya TV channel, the official representatives of the movement rejected this proposal.
On July 22, Izvestia's diplomatic source in Israel announced the intention of the Israeli authorities to discuss the possibility of transferring control of the Gaza Strip to those local structures that will not be affiliated with Hamas in order to give them a chance for self-government.
