Sudden fluctuations in blood sugar levels can negatively affect the functioning of the heart, kidneys and the organ of vision. Overweight, obesity, and an unbalanced diet often cause prediabetic conditions or lead to the development of diabetes mellitus. Armine Afonina, an endocrinologist and nutritionist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia on August 21 which foods without a pronounced sweet taste can provoke such jumps.

"It's important to understand that it's not just desserts that pose a danger to stable sugar levels. There is a fairly extensive group of foods with a high glycemic index, an indicator that reflects the rate of glucose intake into the blood. The higher it is, the faster the sugar level increases and the more sharply its fluctuations occur," the specialist explained.

Among such products, the doctor identified wheat bread and white flour pastries, mashed potatoes, white rice and small pasta, canned beans and corn, instant porridges, semolina, couscous, sweet muffins, cornflakes, popcorn, waffles, chips, as well as boiled beets, carrots and pumpkins. Dried fruits also belong to this list, despite their natural origin.

According to Afonina, before prescribing sugar-lowering drugs, the doctor should tell the patient which foods provoke glucose growth and how culinary processing affects the glycemic load of the dish.

"Keep your diet balanced, watch your weight, and don't forget about regular physical activity. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the development of chronic diseases," she stressed.

On August 6, pediatrician, nutritionist, and SOLGAR expert Maria Kulikova spoke about the dangers of completely eliminating fats from the diet. According to her, they are one of the key macronutrients along with carbohydrates and proteins. Fats perform many vital functions, such as energy — they are a concentrated source of energy, providing 9 calories per 1 g.
