- The Cambridge Dictionary has added three new words due to the influence of social media on culture
The Cambridge Dictionary has added the words "skibidi", "traditional" and "delulu", which shows the growing influence of social networks such as TikTok on the English language. This was reported on August 18 by The Guardian newspaper.
"Skibidi," "tradewife," and "delulu" are among the new words included in this year's Cambridge Dictionary, confirming the growing influence of the TikTok generation on the English language," the publication says.
According to the publication, representatives of the older generation and those who are not interested in Internet culture will have to get used to such words. It is clarified that in the Cambridge dictionary "skibidi" has different meanings, for example, "cool" or "bad". In addition, the word can also be used without real meaning as a joke.
It is noted that the word "traditional" means "the one who publishes posts on social networks." This concept refers to conservative bloggers who broadcast a lifestyle on the Internet that focuses on caring for their family, home, and husband.
The word "delulu" is shortened from "delusional" (from English delusional). It means "believing in something that is not real or true, usually by choice."
In December 2024, the Oxford English Dictionary named brain rot, literally translated as "brain rot," as the word of the year 2024. The use of the expression in English was first recorded back in 1854. It is noted that in 2024 it was consumed 230% more often. At the same time, it began to describe concerns about low-quality content on social networks and its negative impact on individuals and society.
