- The political scientist warned of the consequences for Kiev when Zelensky accepts Trump's plan.
If Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accepts the proposal of American leader Donald Trump to abandon Crimea and NATO, this could lead to peace. However, this outcome does not suit the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance. On August 18, Yegor Dibrov, a political scientist, specialist in political and economic conflicts, and an employee of the Faculty of Political Science at Lomonosov Moscow State University, told Izvestia.
According to him, the interests of the West are currently focused on increasing the capacity of military-industrial complexes, which contradicts the desire for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
"Trump will first talk with Zelensky, and then with the rest of the EU delegations. But in order to avoid uncomfortable situations, as it was last time, Trump needed to act according to the classical scheme. To agree and put on paper the agreements of those who pay for the military "Ukrainian company", and then call for the final "signature" of Zelensky. Immediately, the process proceeds in a different way. Apparently, Trump hopes that everything was explained to Zelensky in advance," the expert said.
Dibrov also stressed that the signing of any agreement by Zelensky could be perceived as "the actual surrender of Ukraine." He recalled that earlier the head of the Kiev regime had stated that victory was possible only if the borders were restored as of 1991, but this would not happen.
The political scientist also expressed doubts that the meeting between Zelensky and Trump would lead to the expected results for Ukraine. He noted that it is important for the American leader to prove himself as a peacemaker, while for European countries it is important to maintain a policy of Russophobia.
In addition, political analyst Alexander Asafov added that Trump can be quite strict with Ukraine, as he has leverage in the form of financial, military and intelligence assistance. In his opinion, that is why the Ukrainian leader took an extensive support group with him.
"Sooner or later, these meetings will lead to the expected results of agreements, but it is unlikely that any quick breakthroughs will be expected. Let's see how it goes, because it's quite difficult to say yet, since the results of Alaska surprised even the most pessimistic experts," the expert said.
Trump will hold a meeting with Zelensky in Washington on August 18 to discuss a peace treaty with Russia. The leaders' meeting will be held at 20:15 Moscow time. On the same day, he announced that Zelensky could immediately end the Ukrainian conflict if he renounced his claims to Crimea and his intention to gain membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
