- The Interior Ministry told about the consequences of fraudsters hacking an account in social networks
Hacking into a social media account is a growing problem. This was announced on August 17 in the Telegram channel of the Department for the Organization of the Fight against the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
"A hacked account is an open door for a whole range of abuses, the consequences of which are snowballing," the report says.
So, by hacking the profile, scammers will be able to steal confidential information. At the same time, they study phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and other data in order to attack both the account owner and his entourage.
Profile hacking can also be used to publish offensive, extremist, or provocative content. Thus, scammers intentionally destroy the reputation of the account owner, cause moral damage, and provoke conflicts.
In addition, fraudsters can use account hacking to commit financial fraud, mass spam, distribute malicious software, blackmail using compromising materials, and commit criminal acts on behalf of the account owner.
Earlier, on August 14, Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and federal coordinator of the Digital Russia party project, reported that over 52,000 offenses had been committed in WhatsApp messengers (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) and Telegram since the beginning of this year. The total damage exceeded 106.4 billion rubles.
