Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded MGIMO Rector Anatoly Torkunov the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, First Class. The decree of the head of state was posted on August 16 on the official Internet portal of legal information.

It is noted that Torkunov was awarded for his outstanding contribution to the development of Russian education and long-term scientific and teaching activities. He will turn 75 on August 26.

"Award the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 1st Degree to Anatoly Vasilyevich Torkunov, Rector of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation," reads the text of the decree.

Torkunov was first elected to the position of rector in 1992. Since then, he has been re-elected several times. On August 26, 2020, congratulating Torkunov on his 70th birthday, Putin noted the high professionalism of the MGIMO rector, as well as his "talent as a teacher and mentor, creative and organizational abilities."
