The Russian Academy of Sciences reported the formation of a large coronal hole in the Sun

A large coronal hole is forming on the Sun, which can cause an increase in the speed of the solar wind and lead to an aggravation of the geomagnetic situation. This was announced on August 15 at the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISSF) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"A large coronal hole has been growing on the Earth-facing side of the Sun for several days now. Over the past 24 hours, there has been a particularly rapid increase in its area and size, which has increased by about 50% in 24 hours," the Telegram channel of the laboratory wrote.

It is noted that due to the growth of the coronal hole, the speed of the solar wind will exceed the values by about 2-2.5 times, which may worsen the geomagnetic situation for 7-10 days.

"Up to this point, including next weekend, the Earth's magnetic field will remain calm," the laboratory said.

Earlier, on August 12, the laboratory reported that the emissions of giant prominences resumed in the Sun. It was noted that prominences appearing at any point of the Sun are less likely to reach the Earth than, for example, flares. Even when ejected, an accurate direction towards the planet is required.
