Russians listed topics of interest to them for communication with Americans
Russians are open to dialogue with Americans, but prefer to avoid topics of politics, finance, and gender issues. 13% of Russian citizens would like to debunk common myths and stereotypical perceptions of the country. On August 15, analysts of the Skyeng online school of foreign languages told Izvestia about this.
Russians are most often interested in the daily lives of Americans: how everyday life, work, medicine and education work — 26% of respondents would like to talk about this. The second most popular (20%) is travel and the exchange of impressions about places of worship in both countries. One in six (15%) would prefer to discuss movies, music and TV series, while 14% would like to touch upon issues of education and compare secondary and vocational education systems in the countries.
It is noted that one in ten (13%) would like to discuss common myths, correct stereotypical perceptions of their country and debunk misconceptions (for example, about bears, vodka or balalaika). 4% of Russians would like to discuss food, gastronomic features and traditions of the countries, while 5% would prefer to talk about sports. Another 3% would discuss culture and traditions in the USA and Russia.
Among the topics that Russians consider unacceptable for discussion are politics and international relations (31%), money and personal income (30%), gender issues (29%) and religion (10%).
"The results of the study show that people strive for informal human communication: travel topics and personal experiences unite people from all over the world, and cinema and music remain the universal language of communication. As a rule, a level of at least Upper-Intermediate (B2) is recommended for confident dialogue in English," noted Anastasia Yekushevskaya, Academic Director of Skyeng.
On July 21, analysts at Avito Services and Avito Jobs told Izvestia that English, Chinese and Japanese became the most popular languages among Russian employers in the first half of 2025. Korean (8%) and Italian (7%) complete the top five.
