Washington has ordered the deployment of its air force and naval forces in the southern Caribbean to begin countering threats from Latin American drug cartels. This was reported on August 14 by the Reuters news agency, citing two informed sources.

According to them, US President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon to use the military to prosecute drug cartels recognized by the Americans as international terrorist organizations.

"Trump has made the fight against drug cartels one of the main goals of his administration, part of a broader effort to limit migration and secure the southern border of the United States," the article says.

In recent months, the White House administration has already sent two warships to the region for these purposes, the sources said.

The New York Times reported on August 8 that Trump had signed a directive to the Pentagon to begin using military force against some Latin American drug cartels, which his administration considers terrorist organizations. The toughest step in the Trump administration's escalating campaign against the cartels.

On August 5, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected Trump's proposal to send US troops into the country to fight drug cartels. Sheinbaum added that the US representatives may insist on the proposed option, but this topic will not even be amenable to discussion.
