- Loading of the port of Los Angeles due to duties turned out to be the maximum in 117 years
The workload of the port of Los Angeles in July 2025 was a record for 117 years of harbor activity due to customs duties initiated by the American government. The relevant information was published on the official website of the port on August 14.
"July was the busiest month in the 117-year history of the Port of Los Angeles. The port handled 1,019,837 twenty—foot equivalents (TEU), which is 8.5% more than in July last year," the statement said.
It is noted that manufacturers began to import goods at an accelerated pace due to the previously initiated increase in duties in the autumn of this year.
"Shippers have been shipping their cargoes in advance for months to stay ahead of tariffs, and the recent activity at America's main port really confirms this," said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.
On July 31, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing additional tariffs of 50% on a number of imported goods containing copper. At the same time, the administration noted that the tariffs would not apply to copper scrap, as well as materials, including ores, concentrates, cathodes, anodes and matte. These product categories will retain the same customs regime.
Later, on August 1, the American leader imposed additional duties on imported goods from the European Union and more than 60 foreign countries. The highest new duties were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). Goods from countries not mentioned in the decree that have not concluded an agreement with the United States are subject to a duty of 10%.
