US President Donald Trump, during online talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and European leaders organized by Germany, told them of his readiness to provide Kiev with security guarantees, but only if they are not linked to NATO. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 13, citing sources.

"The United States is ready to play some role in securing Kiev. <...> Trump said he would make such a commitment only if the effort was not part of NATO," the publication said.

Another source said that Trump's openness to such guarantees explains the "cautious optimism" of European leaders on the eve of the meeting of the head of the White House with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, as noted, Trump did not specify which guarantees he was talking about, but described only the general concept of what he promised. An unnamed person briefed on the negotiations with European leaders stressed that the United States had "made it clear" that there was no talk of direct arms supplies to Ukraine under any guarantees.

"Trump has made it clear that the United States will not continue to supply weapons or military personnel directly to Ukraine, although they will sell weapons to Europe," the article says.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin, which will take place this Friday, August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska. On August 11, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced Trump's promise to consult with the EU before negotiations with the Russian side, and a few days later, after a conversation with him, he said that Trump "understood" the common position of the EU and Ukraine.

On August 13, the Axios portal called Zelensky's situation "hopeless" due to the Russian-American summit and predicted a difficult situation for him. On the same day, an anonymous American official told Politico newspaper that the White House had called on the Ukrainian authorities to assess their military resources realistically.
