OpenAI, the company that developed the chat bot ChatGpt, plans to invest in the startup Merge Labs in order to compete with the AI company Neuralink of billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk for the development of brain implants. This was reported on August 13 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

According to three sources of the newspaper, the new venture called Merge Labs is raising new funds in the amount of $850 million, while it is expected that most of the new capital will come from the OpenAI venture capital team. They added that Altman will become a co-founder of the company, but will not be directly involved in the new project.

It is reported that the new company will become a direct competitor to Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, which aims to directly connect the human brain to computer interfaces.

According to two sources of the publication, Altman supported the investment and will help launch the project together with Alex Blania, who leads the World eyeball scanning project using digital identification technologies, also supported by the head of OpenAI.

On August 7, OpenAI introduced a new generation of its neural network, GPT—5, thanks to which users will receive more accurate reasoning. During the presentation, the developers assured that the updated version of the neural network is equipped with extended long-term memory and gives errors in responses much less often. GPT-5 will be available to all ChatGPT users, but the number of requests for free users will be limited.
