The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump in Alaska may be a chance to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. On August 12, former Vice Governor of the state Laurent Leman shared this opinion with Izvestia.

"Now, perhaps, the best global forum has been found in order to put aside differences and really work on peace. That would be great. All the participants would go down in history as outstanding peacemakers," Lehman said.

He noted that if the leaders of the two states manage to come to a decision on ending the conflict in Ukraine, this meeting will go down in history as an outstanding event.

The former vice governor added that such an event would require serious support, so many planes with protective equipment would arrive in the state.

On the same day, Lehman announced that Trump had chosen Alaska as the venue for talks with Putin because the region was strategically important.

On August 8, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Alaska on August 15. The US president noted that details about the upcoming negotiations will be published later. Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov called the choice of a venue for negotiations logical. He said that the economic interests of the states intersect in the region.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
