- The expert reported on the attempts of the Leipzig Zoo to justify the euthanasia of tiger cubs
The zoo of the German city of Leipzig is trying to justify the euthanasia of three Amur Red Book tiger cubs. The president of the hospice "House of the Tiger" Yana Oleinik told Izvestia about this on August 11.
It was clarified that due to the complete lack of attention from the mother, which lasted almost two days, the cubs became very weak. Seeing that the female does not show maternal instinct, veterinarians decided to euthanize the cubs.
"What kind of natural behavior can we talk about if an animal is initially in captivity? This means that the female was either covered very early, and therefore the lack of her maternal experience affected her, or there were simply some problems in the process of keeping the animal," Oleinik shared.
She explained that it is not particularly difficult to raise a tiger cub without a mother nowadays. There are special mixtures and methods of their preparation, and in Europe access to ingredients for animal feeding is practically unlimited.
"Yes, it's laborious, yes, it's sleepless nights, yes, it's taking care of babies, but nevertheless, in our opinion, there was absolutely no point in killing cubs," the hospice president summed up.
Oleinik clarified that despite the strained relations between the two countries, European colleagues can always seek help from specialists from Russia.
A zoo in the German city of Leipzig euthanized three Amur tiger cubs on August 9 because their mother refused to raise them. The tigress did not pay attention to the brood for almost two days, which caused the babies to become very weak. In this regard, the specialists had to "take on heavy responsibility and save the cubs from suffering due to starvation."
