Russia strongly condemns the intention of the Israeli authorities to establish control over the Gaza Strip, as such actions violate international law. This was stated on August 10 by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, at a meeting of the organization's Security Council.

"The actions of the Israeli leadership grossly violate international law, demonstrating its open disregard for both the appeals of the international community and the decisions of the Security Council," the Russian diplomat said at a meeting broadcast on the body's website.

In addition, Polyansky added, the Israeli authorities are dealing a serious blow to the prospects for a two-State solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

"We strongly condemn the intention of the Government of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu will seize Gaza," he stressed.

Netanyahu said on August 10 that the key problem in relations between the Jewish state and the Gaza Strip is the absence of a unified Palestinian state. At the same time, according to the Prime Minister, the Palestinians "were offered many times to create a state," but they refused.

Thousands of people protested in Tel Aviv on August 9 against the Israeli Prime Minister's plan to seize the Gaza Strip. The protesters are demanding an end to the military conflict and a deal with the Palestinian Hamas movement to free the hostages. The day before, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that the Israeli Security Cabinet had approved Netanyahu's decision to occupy Gaza City, located in the enclave.
