Radioactive water from the base in Coleport, where warheads for Trident nuclear submarines are stored, was thrown into the sea bay of Loch Long in Scotland. This is reported by The Guardian newspaper with reference to documents from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA).

"The Royal Navy did not ensure proper maintenance of the network of 1.5 thousand water pipes at the base," SEPA documents say.

The incident occurred due to malfunctions in the maintenance of the water supply system at the base, which led to the release of tritium used in nuclear warheads.

Similar leaks have already occurred twice: in 2010 and in 2019, when a significant amount of tritium water entered the nuclear weapons treatment area and further into Loch Long. Although the radiation level was low and did not pose a threat to health, SEPA acknowledged that maintenance deficiencies had caused the pipes to break."Газета.Ru ".

The British Ministry of Defense promised to take action, but new leaks occurred in 2021, which led to additional verification.

The publication clarified that the British government tried to conceal this data, claiming that it was related to national security. However, by the decision of the Commissioner for Information of Scotland, the documents were declassified, despite the threat to reputation.
