The explosion of the gas-air mixture at the Caustic plant of JSC BSK in Sterlitamak occurred due to pipeline depressurization in preparation for repair work. This was announced on August 9 by the company's press service.

"A technological incident has occurred at the BSK production site. In preparation for the planned shut-down overhaul at the vinyl chloride—polyvinyl chloride complex, the pyrogas process pipeline was depressurized along the weld seam," the press service told TASS.

It is specified that the damaged pipeline was equipped with an automatic valve shut-off system. This contributed to the rapid localization of the incident.

The press service also stressed that the victims, who were in the immediate vicinity of the cotton point, promptly received all necessary assistance on the spot, they were immediately taken to medical institutions. There were no fatalities as a result of the incident.

The life and health of the region's population is also not in danger, the company said. At the moment, environmental quality control has been organized in the surrounding area.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Bashkortostan clarified that 15 people were evacuated from the building. A check was organized on the fact of cotton. A criminal case has been opened.
