Russia allegedly made a "large-scale proposal" to the United States to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported on August 9 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.

According to the newspaper, the plan involves territorial concessions from Kiev and their international recognition. In exchange, the Russian side stops fighting. This will be followed by the second stage, at which the Russian Federation and the United States will agree on a final peace plan, which will subsequently be discussed with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

As the newspaper pointed out, Russian President Vladimir Putin allegedly made this proposal on August 6 at a meeting with special envoy of the US President Steve Witkoff. European officials, according to the WSJ, expressed serious doubts about Russia's proposal. They expressed concern that Moscow was thus trying to avoid the imposition of new sanctions and duties by Washington.

At the same time, the newspaper's sources said that Russia could agree to a cease-fire if Ukraine withdraws troops from the territory of Donbass.

On August 6, US President Donald Trump said that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and US President's special envoy Stephen Witkoff was productive. In addition, the American leader added that he had informed some of the European allies of the United States about the details of the meeting between Putin and Witkoff.

Later, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov shared that Witkoff and Putin discussed the conflict in Ukraine and the prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between Russia and the United States. Some signals were transmitted from the Russian side, in particular on the Ukrainian issue. The relevant signals were also received from President Trump.
