Despite the effectiveness of mosquito repellent sprays, their frequent use is harmful to human health, as they contain chemical components such as diethyltoluamide (DEET), picaridin and synthetic pyrethroids that negatively affect the body. About this on August 9, "Gazeta.Ru" was told by Andrey Dorokhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A. N. Reformatsky of the RTU MIREA.

The chemist noted that a large amount of DEET can cause skin irritation, headaches, allergic reactions, and even neurotoxic effects.

"Synthetic pyrethroids such as allethrin, prallethrin, transflutrin and cypermethrin, <...> with prolonged or improper use can have an effect on humans. Children, the elderly, and people with chronic respiratory diseases are especially sensitive to them," Dorokhov explained.

This is possible when, as the associate professor said, the spray is applied in large quantities or on the face in the area of the eyes and mouth.

According to the expert, sprays without DEET content should be chosen for children.

"Alternative drugs based on picaridine or natural ingredients such as citronella, clove or eucalyptus extracts can serve," the specialist recommended.

He also advised that upon returning home, thoroughly wash off the remnants of mosquito sprays.
