The average waist size of people suffering from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is 100 cm in men and 86 cm in women. This was announced on August 8 by representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

Scientists were able to establish that carriers of the pathology have increased fat accumulation not only in the liver, but also around the organs located in the abdominal cavity. Such people also have impaired cholesterol metabolism and its accumulation in the vascular wall.

As part of the study, the specialists worked with two groups: one included patients with diagnosed NAFLD, and the other included healthy ones. This approach helped to find out that in the first group there were more cases of obesity and overweight.

"The average waist circumference was 100 and 94 cm for men and 86 and 74 cm for women, respectively. There was an increase in the ratio of waist circumference and hip circumference, which is also a sign of abdominal (visceral) obesity — 0.98 and 0.86. The total fat mass of the groups with and without NAFLD is 27.3 and 14.8 kg, and the fat–free mass is 55.3 and 44.6 kg," said Vasily Chulkov, Director of the NovSU Medical Institute.

It is noted that the results obtained during the study can be applied as a basis for further programs for the treatment of NAFLD and obesity in young patients.

Earlier, on May 21, Elena Fedorova, an endocrinologist at the Academician Roitberg Clinic, warned that the problem of obesity has reached the scale of a national threat: two thirds of the adult population of Russia are overweight.
