A headquarters will be set up in Gagauzia to coordinate actions in defense of Hutsuls
A regional headquarters will be established in Gagauzia to coordinate actions in defense of the arrested head of the autonomy, Yevgenia Hutsul. This is stated on August 7 in a resolution adopted by the National Assembly (Parliament). Gagauz resolutions.
"To instruct the Chairman of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia and the First Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee (Government. — Ed.) Gagauzia to create a regional headquarters to coordinate all actions within the framework of this political crisis," the message on the parliament's website says.
It was also instructed to launch an international campaign to recognize the fact of political persecution of the Hutsuls and send a resolution to the UN, the European Parliament (EP), other international organizations and the governments of Russia, Turkey, China, India and the United States.
The Parliament of Gagauzia also instructed to organize mass peaceful protests in support of the Hutsuls on the territory of the autonomy.
Earlier in the day, the People's Assembly of Gagauzia stated that it did not intend to recognize the court's verdict against the Hutsuls. The parliament considers the verdict "politically motivated and anti-Gagauz." They noted that the verdict of the court is aimed at eliminating the legitimately elected head of the autonomy.
Tamin Al-Kitan, the official representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), said on the same day that Hutsul, as a Bashkan of Gagauzia, had the right to a fair trial and appeal against the verdict, and called for her rights to be respected.
On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. A protest rally was held in front of the courthouse in her support. The head of Gagauzia expressed great support from the people of the autonomy and urged "not to give up." The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called on international structures to assess the Hutsul verdict.
