The expert gave advice on lifestyle after completing chemotherapy
Completing a course of chemotherapy is an important stage in the treatment of cancer. However, the body needs time to recover, as therapy affects not only cancer cells, but also healthy ones. Tatiana Dergacheva, Medical Director for Oncology at R-Pharm Group, told Izvestia on August 8 about how to properly support the body during this period.
"After completing the course, it is important to understand that the body has passed a serious test and needs competent comprehensive support. The recovery process depends on the intensity of the treatment and the individual characteristics of the patient's body," she said.
The expert emphasizes that after chemotherapy, it is extremely important to pay attention to nutrition. Since the treatment disrupts the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, the diet should be balanced - with enough vegetables, fruits, low—fat protein and whole grains. It is also necessary to maintain the water balance.
Physical activity plays an important role in rehabilitation, but exercise should be moderate. The specialist recommends starting with walking, yoga or swimming, after consulting with a doctor. At the same time, it is important to listen to your body and not overload.
Besides, a good rest is equally important. Chemotherapy often causes severe fatigue, so you need to sleep at least seven to eight hours a day and, if necessary, allow yourself a short nap.
The emotional state also requires attention. Meditation, breathing exercises, and communication with loved ones are useful for reducing stress. If anxiety or depression do not go away, it is worth seeking professional psychological help.
The expert warns that during the recovery period, alarming symptoms should not be ignored — in case of any deterioration, you should immediately consult a doctor. Excessive exertion should be avoided, as the body needs a gentle regime.
According to the expert, smoking and alcohol slow down recovery and increase the risk of complications, so it is better to give them up. Also, do not isolate yourself from your loved ones: their support helps you return to normal life faster.
"Recovery from chemotherapy is an individual process, but following these recommendations will significantly improve the quality of life," concluded Dergacheva.
On August 1, Evgeny Libson, Deputy Director of the Institute of Oncology at the European Medical Center (EMC), spoke about the importance of early detection of lung cancer. The doctor also stressed that smoking is the main cause of cancer.
