Latin American jazz musician and Grammy Award winner Eddie Palmieri has died at the age of 88. This was reported by The Guardian on August 7, citing a statement from the music label Fania Records.

"Eddie Palmieri, an avant—garde musician who was one of the most innovative performers of rumba and Latin American jazz, has died at the age of 88," the material says.

It is specified that the musician died at his home in New Jersey after a long illness.

Palmieri was born in New York City in 1936. He started learning to play the piano at an early age, later became interested in playing timbales and joined his uncle's orchestra. However, the craving for the piano turned out to be stronger, so he soon abandoned the Cuban drum.

Palmieri was the first Latin American to receive a Grammy Award in 1975 for the album "The Sun of Latin Music." He later won seven more awards. Even at the age of 80, he continued to write music, and during the coronavirus pandemic, the musician gave online concerts.
