Watermelon and melon are healthy in moderation, but it's better to eat them in the morning. Kira Ignatieva, a specialist in nutrition and lifestyle correction, told Izvestia about this on August 7.

"It's ideal after breakfast or as a snack in combination with the right fats, such as nuts. You should not eat at night, so as not to provoke bloating, discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract, frequent urination and increased body swelling in the morning," the expert noted.

According to her, the optimal portion of watermelon is 200 grams per day, melon — 150-250 grams per day.

Ignatieva said that when choosing a watermelon, you should pay attention to its weight: it should be heavy, and the tail should be dry. A yellow spot on the side indicates that the fruit has ripened in the garden. If you tap on a ripe watermelon, it makes a ringing sound.

As for the melon, it should smell good, especially in the tail area, the peel should be dry and free from green spots. Good signs are a clear grid and easy separation of the peduncle.

The expert said that many consider watermelon and melon to be "cleansing" foods, and this is only partially true. These fruits really help to remove excess fluid and improve intestinal function due to the high content of water, potassium and magnesium.

"But this is not a detox in the full sense of the word. Detoxification processes in the body are the proper functioning of organs such as the liver, kidneys, intestines, and lymphatic system. Their well—coordinated work is ensured only by an integrated approach that includes a balanced diet, regime, adequate sleep, stress management and optimal physical activity," said Ignatieva.

The specialist drew attention to the fact that with diabetes and overweight, watermelon and melon should be consumed in moderation, as they can cause glucose spikes and other problems. People with gastrointestinal diseases should be careful because of possible discomfort, and pregnant women should be careful because of the risk of edema. For children under two or three years of age, these fruits are recommended to be given in small portions with monitoring of the reaction.

On August 6, pediatrician, nutritionist, and SOLGAR expert Maria Kulikova spoke about the dangers of completely eliminating fats from the diet. According to her, they are one of the key macronutrients along with carbohydrates and proteins. Fats perform many vital functions. For example, energy — they are a concentrated source of energy, providing 9 calories per gram.
