- The seismologist spoke about the consequences of the Kamchatka shift after the earthquake
The shift of Kamchatka by 2 m after the earthquake will have no consequences for the climate and other areas of natural life on the peninsula. Peter Shebalin, a seismologist and director of the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia on August 5.
Earlier that day, the Kamchatka branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that after a powerful earthquake on July 30, the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula shifted by almost 2 m. They noted that this displacement is comparable to the horizontal displacement after the earthquake in the Tohoku region of Japan in 2011.
"This is a rapid movement during an earthquake, and the constant movement of Kamchatka towards the Pacific Ocean is going on all the time at a rate of several centimeters per year. It will have no consequences for the climate and other things. This is such an accelerated change in the process that is constantly happening," Shebalin said.
The scientist also ruled out the possibility that Kamchatka could separate from the continent and become an island as a result of tectonic shifts.
"Kamchatka is a part of the North American lithospheric plate, this plate is moving towards the Pacific Ocean and is moving towards the Pacific lithospheric Plate," the seismologist noted.
The earthquake in Kamchatka occurred on July 30. A tsunami threat has been declared on the coast of the Avacha Bay due to a strong earthquake. As a result of a seismic event in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the wall of a kindergarten building collapsed.
This was followed by a series of aftershocks. On August 4, RAS specialists reported that seven significant earthquakes were recorded in Kamchatka during the day. It was clarified that more than 85 seismic events were registered in Kamchatka in just one day.
