Former FC Porto captain and Champions League winner Jorge Costa has died.

Former football player and coach Jorge Costa, who played for Portuguese club Porto, died at the age of 54. This was reported on August 5 by the newspaper A Bola.

It is specified that the athlete died at the age of 53 in the hospital of San Juan in Porto. The cause was serious complications of heart disease.

Costa spent most of his career with Porto, where he played from 1990 to 2005. He played 324 games for the main squad, scored 20 goals and provided five assists. As a member of the team, he became Portuguese champion eight times and won the national cup five times. In 2003, Costa won the UEFA Cup with Porto, and in 2004 he won the Champions League.

After his playing career, Costa worked as a head coach at a number of clubs, including Portuguese Braga, Ollanense and Akademica, Romanian CFR, Cypriot AEL and Anorthosis, as well as the national team of Gabon. In June 2024, he assumed the post of Director of Football at Porto.
