- Astronauts on the ISS will try to brew beer in space for the first time
Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) will try brewing beer in space for the first time as part of an experiment. This was announced on August 5 by the American brewing company Starbase Brewery, which initiated the project.
"We have launched our first two payloads to the ISS as part of the NASA Crew-11 mission! MicroBrew-1 (project name — Ed.) is the world's first attempt to make beer ferment in space," reads the company's page on the social network X.
It is noted that the prepared drink will stay for some time on the space station, and then it will be sent to Earth. This is necessary so that scientists can study how yeast is affected by the space environment and what happens to the finished product in conditions of increased radiation.
In addition, another study will examine the fermentation process in microgravity and radiation conditions. It will be led by microbiologist Luis Zea and his company Jaguar Space.
On August 2, the Crew Dragon spacecraft with the crew of the Crew-11 mission docked to the ISS. In addition to Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov, the crew of Crew-11 includes NASA astronauts Zina Kardman, Michael Fink and JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui.
